Cairo Diaries - 16

Language

I hope that this post lives up to your expectations, for all the build-up that I have been creating in the past 3 Cairo Diaries posts...
O.K... You should be quite aware by now.. that Arabic is the main language of communication here. Arabic is everything here. Every single signboard to Number Plates are in Arabic. So make sure, if you are coming here, to learn atleast the numbers in arabic.

Waahad (1), Itneen (2), Thalatha (3), Arba (4), Khamsa(5), Sitta (6), Sabha (7), Tamaniya (8), Tissa (9), Ashra (10)

These are the basic numbers. AhdaAshra (11), Itna-ashra(12) .. I hope you get the drift. If you can understand the basic numbers you will be able to comfortably understand the other numbers..

Ashreen for 20, Thalaatheen for 30, Khamseen for 50, and miah for 100.

How are you ? - Kaef il Haal

Response to this is usually - Al-Hamdudillah

O.K.. Here is something extra..

'Anaa maa araf Arabi' - I do not know Arabic
'Anaa shuwaiyya shuwaiyya maaloom arabi' - I know little little Arabic.(:))

O.K.. Here is some more gyaan...

Half is Hunoos.
Three fourths is Thelaaterba - (தேலாடேர்பா )

So when you go to a shop and ask the shopkeeper, how much is Half Kilo... You can ask,

Bikemda ------- (Fill up with the measure).
Bikemda Unoos (அரை கிலோ எவளவு ?)

Where are you ? - Intha Fain ?
How much time to arrive ? - Uddamak Athyae ?
Which Place is this ? - Ana Fain ?
Name of this road ? - Ism Shera tha ?
Come Fast - Taala Busuran
I am waiting - Anaf Intezaarak
10 minutes - Ashra Takika (Takika is minutes)
No Meat - Belash Lahma
No Chicken - Belash Firakh
No Beef - Belash Beefi
Today - Al Yaum
Yesterday - Ams/Embarah
Tomorrow - Bukhara / Ghadan

Time is actually called Sa'ar here. So 15 minutes is called roba Sa'ar
(Remember Roopa ? Quarter of an hour :P)

Kolliyom Ashreen : Everyday 20.
(This is how we respond whenever any Taxi Driver asks for KhamsaAshreen (25) :D)

P.S:- This is my attempt at learn Arabic in 30 minutes.. :)
P.P.S:- I have the book - Learn Arabic in 30 days with me to read during my 1 hour up and 1 hour down journeys.
P.P.P.S:- I've learnt more Arabic in 2 months than I did in my 14 months stay at Muscat :)
P.P.P.P.S:- I have not had formal training in Tamil, (Promise :) ), which explains the pathetic word formations and totally senseless grammar.

Weekend

Extremely sorry for the non-post week... Lots of drafts waiting. I know I've promised a couple of posts... hmmm.. let's see..

Weekend has started today for me already... and the best part is, I have to go to work today...

So what did I do this week ?

Workwise - Quite Fruitful. Very Tiring. Left office at 12 and 1 in the night and went back in the morning at 9. Kind of straining, but again, this was not the kind of thankless work I was doing at Muscat.. So I am quite happy and do not mind slogging..

My Mahabharata war is shaping up quite well. :) I am really proud of it actually. 12 days have been written till now... 6 more to do.. The last six days were days of intense battle on Kurukshetra, so its kind of nervous for me. I had a lump in my throat when I wrote Bheeshma vadh.. And I am scared I will cry when I will write the 13th day of war - Abhimanyu Vadh, according to me, the True Turning point of the Great war. The series is being circulated in Parts to my office colleagues by G who are part of the Ram-Ram series, I had already mentioned before. So, once I've finished drafting the whole thing, Will post it here.

Not able to even open Snow. Feeling very very bad. This is the first time in 7 years that I have not been reading a book for more than 2 weeks continuously. I know.. It sucks !!!! But to compensate, I am completing another book that I had part-read previously. Atleast something's complete.

Got Some totally super ideas for my Political thriller. Its running as a movie in my mind, again and again... :) My Avan-Aval is not in good shape though. Running out of scenarios.. Will write more..definitely.

I might get a chance to go out to see the Pyramids today.. If that is the case, then you can expect another post here. :) :D

Of Quizzes, Answers and Destiny ... Part 8

Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7

Once again, I thank all the people, who have been reading this series, and have been encouraging me with their kind words.

This incident happened about 7 months after the First Part. It may sound exaggerated. So putting up the warnings and disclaimers now. BTW this has already been documented in my chronicles.

This was one major incident, which kind of literally cemented my spot as the 'First choice' for quizzes. During 1999, one day, during the Assembly, a ma'm made an announcement for a quiz selection. It was to be held on 3rd floor at 3:30 PM. V and myself went to the classroom.

The classroom was a total chaos. There were about 50 people in it. About 20-22 guys and girls from +1 and about 12-15 guys from X std. The remaining were all 8ths and 9th standards. All of them had come to participate for the quiz. V and myself looked at each other, and swallowed hard. It was going to be tougher than we had expected it to be.

Revathy Ma'm came at 4 PM. She started the quiz. She actually wanted to finish the 'chottus' so that she could concentrate on the higher classes. So she pooled 8th and 9th standards together. In about 10 minutes the results were quite obvious. V and myself were more than a handful for the others. They had to leave. V and myself stayed back for next 'round'

Next round was with X's. Revathy Ma'm tried quite hard to 'eliminate' us. Questions became tougher. V and myself were fielding bouncers and half volleys. :)

The question that moved us ahead was
'Which is the loneliest island in the world ?'
The answer was Tristan Da Cunha. Its off the coast of Africa, mid Atlantic.

Revathy ma'm was impressed. She decided to push us further. Then there was blood. The +1s were not as jujubi's as I had expected them to be. But, we were equally good. Both drew blood. It was actually a photo finish with the +1's. After this, there were only five people in the room. V, Revathy Ma'm, One +2 guy, One X guy and myself.

Revathy ma'm had already decided that the Xth guy and +2guy were going for the quiz. The audition was merely an eye wash and a filter to identify budding talent. Though I kind of knew it from the beginning, I wanted to prove a point. I stayed on. Fought hard. I was of the opinion, that even if I did not get selected, I would atleast get noted.

After a lot of deliberation, Revathy Ma'm decided that she wanted me in the quiz, and told this to the Xth standard guy. Obviously he was disappointed. He tried to tell ma'm that he had taken time out of his special classes and tests to come for this quiz. But Revathy Ma'm stood her ground. The guy had to relent. But he was obviously very disappointed, but he took it quite sportingly. That's what I liked about him, and that i the reason, I remember him till date. I can never ever be that sportive.

What happened after that ?

The quiz for which I had actually auditioned was a TV Quiz. To be aired on Doordarshan. I came to know this, only the next day, just before we boarded the train to Beach. I was thrilled to bits !!! :)

That quiz was actually a damp squib in my opinion. Semma boring questions. And all passes went to the strongest team. :(. So we came second. I still remember three or four questions from that quiz. After this quiz, I became Revathy Ma'm's favorite. She praised me sky high in the staff-room, and soon the teachers began to take note.

Following this 'dramatic' win, I was now the most 'sought-after-artiste' (If I may call myself that :P). [I refused to do compering during my school days, mainly because I was not offered it initially :)] Quizzes, Essay Writing, Science Exhibitions, Slogan Writing, Debates, Oratorical Contests, Plays.. You name it, I was there. I was in-demand through out the year. Teachers loved me, because I never gave them any excuses. I was ready for everything.. :) :D

P.S:- Next one will be a good one. I promise :P :)

P.P.S:- I remember atleast two or three questions from each quiz that I have taken part in, Till Date. :) :D

My Code is Red !!!

You must have heard of CodeRed !!!

This one's a tad different. I am planning to make a movie out of it and I am sure it will be a super duper hit, owing to the fact that It will be first released in India, which according to my estimates has the largest number of software engineers in the world.

The inspiration for this story comes from a guy in my current project, who keeps crying Wolf!!! Er.. I mean Code Red ! Every single thing, according to him, is a CodeRed and needs to be resolved ASAP.

My Code is Red is actually three stories, told as three ones.

The first story is the story of a coder, who has been taught that there are only two types of code. One is the Good Code, that Runs as per the Test Cases, fulfills every single idiotic check that can be done and satisfies the LLD (Low Level Requirements), and the other is the Bad Code, that passes all the test cases but fails only one test, that the tester has overlooked. And inevitably, that will be the first test that the program would have to face on its pilot run at client environment. It is the Bad Code that creates 98% of all problems in the world and must be removed at all costs. If you are wondering why the good code creates the 2% of the problems.. no.. the good codes are good codes (I know, that sounds cliched), but its not the good codes that contribute to the 2% but bad coders !!! They are villains like the infamous sentinel programs in Matrix, who must be destroyed from within.

Having this idea in mind, the coder joins India's Second Largest Software company, with the aim of eradicating the bad code. The company gives him adequate training and brings him into the production.

P R O D U C T I O N !!!!

The 10 letter word that is every Fresher's delight and every Software Engineer's bane.

Oh..!! I forgot to tell.. Fresher is the one who does coding, on projects that are actually done in training and sold to clients. Software Engineer is the one who identifies and 'de'bugs these programs after they are delivered to the client. Which actually means, there are no projects that are actually done in Production.. this means, more revenue for the company - as it is going to be a mere cut-copy-paste job, for the others.. :)

Coming back to the story. Our Coder goes into production with a lot of hope, but is made to sit on bench for more than 3 months. Frustrated by this, he decides to 'expose' this indifference shown to his genius and goes into a posting spree. Not blog posts.. but on various bulletin boards in his company. The language of his posts turns out to be sarcastic, and one Department head reads this. He decides to be the one who should give gyaan to the coder. So he calls up this coder and asks him to come to his cubicle. In the cubicle, a la Jerry Maguire transformation happens over our Coder, and he gives fully filtered, 100% Gyaan..seeing which the Department head gets all tensed up and gives access to the Project 'Pinacle' (code named 'Nadir' for internal reporting purposes)

Project 'Pinacle' was a simple Banking Project. There were just 30 million lines of code built into it. It was rumoured to consist of about 7 million files, of which about 6.5 million files did not contain comments/explanation/version history.

The job of our coder was to understand the flow,(which ironically nobody knew), document it, and of course, comment the code, appropriately.

First day into the job, Full of enthu, the coder skips his breakfast and lunch, and by evening, he has finished one file. One File !!! His department head comes with one of his colleagues, to his cubicle, and points to him and says,
'This chap, you won't believe is one of our most talented coders. He's already finished one file, in 6 hours, right ?'
'Er.. Yes Sir..'
'Good, so when can I expect the document ?'
'Which document Sir ?'
'Arey Baba, the Process flow wala..'
'Yes Sir.. Yes Sir..I will send it as soon as I finish it.'
'O.K.. Have a great weekend.. See you on Monday..'

The file has not even been compiled till now. Its just been commented. So at 11 in the night, our coder decides to compile the code. First 10 minutes he struggles to get the shortcut key for compile. Finally he gets it. I mean the shortcut to compile.

'Ctrl + F9' and 10 seconds later the second floor of building 10 hears unheard unparliamentary words.

'The Code was Red !!!'

To be Continued...

P.S:- My attempt at technical humor.. Might be as well just a damp squib. So if this was a mokkai, kindly excuse.. :) :D

RobinHood - The Unknown Story !!!

Just back after watching Robinhood at City Center. The place is a 20 minute walk from my place. Quite Good. I liked the ambience of the Theater (Theater4 to be precise). More like Home Cinema kind of feel.

O.K..Coming to the point.. The movie is good. I won't waste keystrokes trying to tell the story here. Wiki Does it far better than me Here.

Since there is a heated debate going on in the United Kingdom on the origin and authenticity of RobinHood, the whole story of RobinHood is more of a legend than an actual event happening. Hence the director has decided to go ahead with a general dose of his own 'assumptions' or should I call it creative liberty, in making the story flow.

There is action, There is drama, There is good Camera Work.. Good Background score.. If only they had worked more on the storyline. And definitely they need not have misled the audience in the first five minutes of the movie, when they posted that this is the story of the man, who decided to Rob the rich and give to the poor. I was all like, RobinHood is going to jump from some tree and fight with all the baddies.. But he did jump from trees.. He did shoot arrows.. Sharp ones.. :)

Overall - Though this is not something that you expected from the man who made Gladiator, This is Good. :)

P.S:- This is my second movie in theatres after watching Avatar. The first one was 'Kartik Calling Kartik'

P.S:- OK.. I'll let you know the truth.. I am superstitious.. I was scared that posting the Cairo Diary 13 would result in me not being able to post more Cairo Diaries post.. So I decided to quickly nullify the effect by posting a filler post. :) :P

Cairo Diaries - 13

People

लोग

Have been quite boring for the past two weeks on my blog .. I know. I hardly get the time to blog extensively, as I used to. But I am quite liking my work, so no complaints :)

First of all the general lifestyle. Its the same as most of the other Arabic Speaking countries. People like to live in style. But somehow they all appear to be as if they are living in poverty (especially if you look at the way they maintain their cars... :( ).

Working Class itself can be divided into three. The ones who do the menial jobs. Ones who work in offices as clerks, agents, supervisors etc.. and the ones who are executives. The dressing sense of each of these classes are totally different. The ones who work as clerks, agents all dress in jeans !! :) Yes.. That's right. They dress in jeans predominantly and some really nice shirts and T Shirts !! (Yes, Sometimes I do get jealous that I am not able to wear clothes like those,at work ). The executives dress like the POTUS. Yes.. Trust me !! Initially it did get a little awkward with these men, going about their daily activities wearing suits and coats, but then I guess, I got used to it. :P

About the men.. OK .. You can call me racial or discriminating.. But here is what I have to say. Most of the guys are about the same height as most Indians.. around 5'6" to 5'8".. Very few are taller. Almost ALL.. (if you think that's an exaggeration.. take it at 98%..) have short curly hair. About 50% of the population can be termed as short. The crowd on the street wears Tshirts.. Predominantly crew-neck shirts. Almost all of them have a slight pauch. :).

Literacy is Arabic Literacy. Very few people actually have good spoken English. If you do not know even shuwaiyya shuwaiyya Arabi .. God Help you in the Land of the Nile !!!!

(shuwaiyya shuwaiyya is something like our Junoon தமிழ்... I know the spelling is wrong.. Its there for a purpose.. To highlight the hindi way of saying it.. :) .. and BTW .. watch out for the next post.. :) :P )

Finally I come to the point, that I wanted to say.. Sorry... to the point that most of my male readers wanted to read.. Girls.. :)

[ A synopis about the above paras for my non-tamizh readers... The girls are very beautiful. Our heroines don't stand a chance against them. Every single woman who walks down the Talaat Harrb looks like a wannabe Heroine... And Please don't cast your evil eye :P ]

Almost all the ladies are shorter than the men... but again, there are those that stand out !! (Literally .. :P) The dressing sense of the ladies is way too good.. Though From what I've seen, the ladies tend to slant more towards the colors black, mauve and pink.. (Yes, I finally acknowledge that mauve is a color and I can now claim that I can differentiate between mauve, purple and cyan !! Thanks to VB and HTML :) :P)

Hard working people !!! Seriously... At least those who are in manual labour.. Their day starts very early and ends very late.. During summers remember there is Day Light Saving.. implying there is more sunlight.. more time.. which means more work !! :( :(

As of now.. this is the update.. Watch out this space for the next Cairo Diary.. Trust me.. It will be worth the wait !!!

P.S:- If any of you found the content of the post or the language of the post, offensive.. NOM !!!

Good One !!!!

Thanks to S, from Sweden, I gotto know about this video. The video is embedded below.

Amazing.. !!! It is quite strange, but it kind of fills me with a deep sense of peace and happiness, the way the folks dance their way to the altar... Very deep.

The second one is of course, a parody... :)

But an amazing one at that. The slowmotions were too good !!!

BTW.. Video 1 is on its way to become the most watched video on Youtube.. :) :D

The International - Good !!!

Watched 'The International' last night. Amazing and gripping. I liked the screenplay, especially the way it unfolded. It was actually well scripted. Except for some logic missing here and there, rest of it was well taken.

I loved the fight sequence in the Guggenheim. Seriously too good. Though bullets simply going through concrete walls is something I have still not been able to comprehend. :P

Istanbul is shown in all its beauty making me long to visit the Grand Bazaar.

Clive Owen does a great job. Dialogues were செம்ம செம்ம !!!

Here are some of the dialogues in the movie, that I liked !!!

The true value of a conflict is the debt that it creates.

The difference between truth and fiction is that fiction has to make sense...

Sometimes a man can meet his destiny on the road he took to avoid it...

Sometimes the hardest thing in life is to know which bridge to cross and which to burn.

Overall... A good watch.

Cairo Diaries - 12

OK.. Here is some actual update on the Cairo Diaries.. I know you must have got bored with all those photos, but actually, those are all that I have right now.

Two weeks back, we went on a trip to Ain Sukhna. Its actually a beach that overlooks the Red Sea. A 140 km drive from Cairo towards the East, leads to this wonderfully quiet place. Its only about 40 kms away from Suez. So the roads were full of heavy-duty traffic, not the kind of tourist traffic that you would like to see.

After we reached the place, there was a slight confusion at the resort, as we were guests to a particular person, and the host had given us full freedom to access his flat that overlooked the beach. So that's what we did. Took full advantage !!!

Finally, all of us got the act together. Myself and K ran ahead to துண்டு போட்டுfy on the beach. !!! Before the others could come, I grabbed a photo.

After this, was a full 2 hours of complete-nonstop-saltwater excitement. Dance/Games/Songs and of course, hundreds of snaps !!! Best part here is, I learned how to float !!! Yes.. !!!

After that, we felt so hungry, that we were ready to catch the fish and eat. (For those of you who know me... You know how I exaggerate things.. For those of you who don't know me.. Know that I tend to kind of blow up things... பில்ட்அப் குடுத்து fy ) So we went shopping !! For Food !!! Can you believe that ? I didn't too. But then I realised that I was the one who was paying the bills, so I didn't actually have to pinch myself. We had some good food, with Foul (No !!! Not the Chicken Variant.. That's Fowl !!!!) and Khaboos, and some salad, that we made ourselves. Nice lunch. A siesta for about 20 minutes, and second round of water :) It was actually great.

The second round ended around 6:30. The water had actually begun to become damn cold. We actually had some great (and hilarious) snaps. Especially This and This !!! After that, we decided that it was time to go home.

So we left at around 8 from Ain Sukhna and reached Carrefour. Did some shopping (for my flat) and left the place, after having a good dinner !!! When we reached home, it was about 2:30 at night. And trust me, when I say this, the traffic on the road was as heavy as it would be, if it was 8 in the night.

Great Day that was !!! !! !!!)

P.S:- Watch out for those hilarious moments in Enna Kodumai Sir Ithu Posts !!!!

25000 - Not Out !!!

OK... First of all.. Thanks for making this happen...

It has literally been a dream come true... I never imagined that this day would come, when I typed out this post.

Today, 1097 days later... (I am just 5 days short of celebrating the third birthday of this blog... That I haven't bothered about this the last two years is an entirely (in)different topic :P)... 25000 visitors (O.K.. I am changing the term.... Pageloads ) have visited my blog. An average of 23 Pageloads a day !!!

My last milestone was that of 20,000 visitors. That was on February 10th. OK..Second 5000 has been slightly slow... 8 days slow to be precise..Hey, but I was travelling and took me some time to adjust and of course all those Cairo Diaries were not fabricated out of thin air.. !!! They took a lot of weekends too.. So considering all of that, not bad.. !! :)

The highlight of this acheivement is that my blog was dormant, for a period of almost 10 months from September 2008 till August 2009. And the posts before that were utter crap... (you know how they are..so I won't comment). So effectively, I've started blogging only after August 2009. That was when I had this sudden realisation ... (O.K.. ஞானோதயம்) My blog statistics clearly indicate this.

This is indeed a milestone post for me. With this, I feel, as if I've attained something great !!! I remember this particular mail which I sent to a number of people in my delivery list, which was like, you know, thanking people for visiting my blog and making it happen.. Making what happen ?? 100 visitors.. :) :D !!!!!

I pray to the almighty that You and I might live to see every 5000th visitor till we reach 100,000 visitors and then aim for the next 100,000 visitors.. :) :D

As I mentioned in my First post...

It has been a wonderful journey. And i'm sure it'll continue to be.

Weekend flies by !!!

As usual, the weekend flew by. :)

Have to work on Sundays.. So my weekend is actually over... :)

Watched Three very good movies .. make that four..

Baran :- Recommended by RogueGene. It was good. Wish I had read the wiki page before I saw the movie. No !!! Seriously !! The content was quite good at wiki. The movie required slight understanding of the Sufi way of life, which unfortunately I did not have. So I watched the movie like a பட்டிக்காட்டன்... :)

The wiki page quotes this...

There are many references to Persian literary and mystical traditions. The storyline is similar to the mystical path one must follow to be united with the Beloved / Divine in Sufism, hereby enduring the reproach or "blame" of others. Another hint at the mystical path is Lateef's meeting of the Afghan shoemaker, who bears a striking similarity to the (conventional) depiction of the famous Sufi poet Rumi. Also the selling of the ID-card by Lateef, the protagonist, to raise money for Rahmat/Baran's family refers to losing one's identity in the quest for union. Other nods to Persian literature are the sight of the unattainable beloved in the reflection of the mirror (which Lateef caught in the room where Baran was preparing the tea), the feeding of the doves as a reference to Attar's famous work, "Parliament of the Birds"

Nice story. Well taken, like a documentary.

My favorite scene in the whole movie was when Lateef helps Baran pick up the fruits that had fallen down, and she has this look on her face that says, I understand your feelings completely, and I have the same. A gentle smile and whoosh, down comes her purdah... Cha.. That scene was too good. :)

Next I watched Angadi Theru. Already analysed. Next GreenZone - Slight மொக்கை. Over கப்சா. My Sassy Girl - This is the second time I am watching the movie. :)

Could not find time to read Snow. So review watchers.. please wait. Its a biiiiig book. Did some writing for the Mahabharata series. Nothing much.

Let's see if I can get something on track, this week atleast... :)

I just wanted to document this somewhere online so that it stays forever with me.

In 2002, a movie called Thulluvatho Ilamai was released. A couple of days after its release, it suddenly created a buzz among the young audiences. It was mainly because of the highly 'educative' and suggestive content of the theme, which was suited only for mature audiences.

The movie was a runaway hit.

The reason for this post is that, when the movie was released, a lot of people wanted to read the review before deciding to take their families along for the movie. I chose Ananda Vikatan (or was it Kumudam ?). I scrolled the whole book, eagerly, dying to see the review !!). I couldn't locate the review ! All I could see was the first page of the magazine contained a photo of the lead pair and the title of the movie and 'Rama Krishna Allah Yesu' completely tiled and watermarked.

I couldn't fathom the meaning of the poster for a couple of days. Then V (the same V from my Quizzes Answers and Destiny Post) told me, he had cracked it. His mom had apparently told him the meaning of that poster.

It was a cryptic way of saying 'Kadavule Kadavule' - apparently the review team was appalled at the way the film was taken. :)

P.S:- I am still hunting for that review page.
